Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
